(1723-1789)
   philosopher
Born in Heidelsheim in the Palatinate, Paul-Henri, baron d'Holbach, who was a contributor to the Encyclopédie, presented, in his Système de la nature (1770), published under a pseudonym, a materialistic view that was both mechanistic and atheistic. He is also the author of antireligious works (Le Christianisme dévoilé, 1767). His Paris salon, where he received jean-jacques rousseau and denis diderot, was one of the most famous of the period. He challenged Cartesian dualism and Christianity by proposing a radical materialism based on rationalism. The baron d'Holbach insisted on the necessity of morality in politics (Éthocratie, ou le Gouvernement fondé sur la morale, 1776).
